Clinical Experience

 

Employment:

2008 to Present University of California, Irvine School of Medicine:  Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and Human Behavior – Teaching in Child Fellowship & Core Residency Program – Inpatient & Outpatient Clinical Services - Clinical Director, ADHD Outpatient Clinic – Research interests:  ADHD, group therapy for children and adolescents, disease management, recovery programs for persons with severe and persistent mental illness.

2000 to 2007 Universal Care: Vice President of Behavioral Health  Responsible for operations, program development, utilization management, and quality management. Provide outpatient psychological services for children and adults at staff model clinics.  Developed 12 week group program for children with ADHD which includes behavior modification, parent education, cognitive behavioral therapy and social skills training.  Developed program manual and clinical information systems for a Medicare Special Needs Program for persons with Severe and Persistent Mental Illness.  This program has operated successfully in Orange County for 5 years and is now expanding to 4 other counties.  The program provides integrated medical, psychiatric and social services using a staff model approach.  Oversee managed care network for 350k lives including utilization management, network development and quality improvement.

1997 to 2000 Aspen Community Services, Garden Grove:  Chief Psychologist for agency contracted by Orange County Healthcare Agency to provide psychological evaluation and treatment for children and adolescents under AB 3632 and EPSDT funding.  Provided assessment, individual and family therapy, case management and supervision of interns.

1980 to 2000 Clinical Psychologist in private practice.  Hours varied from full time to part time depending on other activities under various consulting contracts.  Subspecialties included child and adolescent treatment, learning disabilities and attention deficit disorder.  Practice included both inpatient and outpatient settings including liaison psychological services at several medical-surgical facilities.

1990 to 1992 Los Altos Hospital, Long Beach:  Director, Outpatient Program for children with ADHD which provided assessment, medication management by child psychiatrist, individual/family therapy and parent education.

1987 to 1989 Charter Hospital of Long Beach:  Contracted as Clinical Director for Youth Services.  Duties included program development including the establishment of a Children’s Unit, Young teen Unit, Adolescent Psych Unit, and Adolescent Chemical Dependency Unit.  Responsible for staff development, supervision of treatment team, utilization review, quality improvement, and marketing.

1982 to 1987 College Hospital, Cerritos:  Contracted as program Director for Children’s Program.  Duties included the establishment of a Children’s Unit and a Preadolescent Unit.  Responsible for staff development, supervision of treatment team, utilization review, quality improvement and marketing.  Also served as Chief Psychologist for the hospital.

1980 to 1996 Miller Children's Hospital (Long Beach Memorial Medical Center) Staff psychologist.  Provided consultation and treatment for children and adolescents hospitalized with various medical conditions.  Provided psychotherapy, hypnosis, family counseling, psychological testing and collaboration with other services including social work, chaplain, occupational and physical therapy and child life services.

1979 to 1980 Psychological Counseling Center, Long Beach:  Registered Psychological Assistant.  Supervised by Sivan Caukins, Ph.D.  Duties included psychological testing, individual and group psychotherapy, family therapy.  Patients included children, adolescents and adults with a wide range of psychopathology.  Also provided supervised treatment of inpatients at College Hospital, Cerritos.

1973 to 1974 Western Institute of Human Resources, Long Beach (a licensed partial hospital program).  Psychological Intern.  Supervised by Julio Guerra, Ph.D. and David Giem, MD. Duties included psychological testing, individual and group psychotherapy, family therapy, milieu therapy.  Patients were severely disturbed children and adolescents including experience with preschool children.  Diagnosis included conduct disorders, affective disorders, developmental disorders including autism and psychotic disorders.  Training also included weekly didactic presentations from faculty of the USC School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry.
 

Teaching Experience

F”2006  Alliant International University, Irving: Visiting Professior.  Taught Pediatric Psychology

1980 to 1996  UC Irvine College of Medicine Volunteer Faculty:  Clinical Instructor (Pediatrics).  Provided in-service presentations to residents at Miller Children’s Hospital (Memorial Medical Center, Long Beach).

F”81 & S’91  Rosemead Graduate School of Psychology at BIOLA University:  Visiting Professor.  Taught Adolescent Psychotherapy.

1967 to 1980  Los Angeles Harbor College:  Associate Professor (Speech).  Also taught courses in psychology, personal development and broadcasting.  Served as Coordinator of Student Activities (‘69-”70), Counselor (‘74-”78) and Director of the Learning Assistance Center (‘78-”80).  Developed special programs for learning disabled students and disadvantaged students.  Included writing proposals for and administration of federal grant programs.  Also developed tutoring services and supervised the production of multimedia instructional resources.

The website is recommended by both Psychology Today and the American Psychological Association and currently serves 360,000 visitors per month.

2006 Total Focus: A Comprehensive Program to Improve Attention, Concentration and Self-Control in Children  A multimedia program (138 page workbook, 2 CDs for parents 3CDs for Children, temp biofeedback card, behavioral charts) published by Legacy Parenting Company

1985 to present: Talk show guest appearances on KABC-TV, KCAL, KFI, KLOS, KRTH, KABC (Michael Jackson), KOST all in Los Angeles, KFYI (Phoenix), KSL (Salt Lake).  Served as professional spokesperson for A Better Way of Learning (publishers of “The Phonics Game”)
