New Study - Smoking Parents Hurt Healthy Kids' Lungs  Smoking parents are hurting their healthy kids according to  a study reported at the American Thoracic Society's meeting this past weekend that indicates children of parents who smoke may not show symptoms of breathing problems, but may show reduced lung function. The reduced lung function could get worse with continued exposure to the secondhand smoke.

An Apple A Day - During Pregnancy - Keeps The Doctor Away  Pregnant women who eat apples and fish may reduce the risk of their children suffering from allergies, Scottish researchers reported yesterday.

Soda Not Just Dangerous for Children   Drinking soda not only contributes to the climbing obesity rate, but it also strains your body's ability to process sugar. Some scientists now suspect that the sweet stuff may help explain why the number of Americans with type 2 diabetes has tripled from 6.6 million in 1980 to 20.8 million today.

Weight reduction surgery: Is it right for teens?  The number of American youngsters 12 to 19 who had weight-reduction surgery tripled between 2000 and 2003, according to a study in the March edition of the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine.  The total in the most recent year was 771, still a small number. But because of the increase, there's been growing discussion about whether it's the right thing for a teen to do.


Steroids: The new teen drug  They've long been used by fanatical body-builders, but today thousands of ordinary teenage boys are abusing steroids - risking brain damage, heart disease and infertility. So how do you spot the danger signs?

Start School Later In The Morning, Say Sleepy Teens  A survey of sleep-deprived teens finds they think that a later start time for school and tests given later in the school day would result in better grades. The survey was presented at the American Thoracic Society 2007 International Conference, on Sunday, May 20.
