A Pioneering System Allows Autistic Children To Communicate With Their Environment  Communication ability among children who are intellectually disabled or have communication limitations (such as autism, down syndrome, or cerebral palsy) may soon be improved thanks to a research group of the University of Granada.

Children With Both Autism And ADHD Often Bully, Parents Say  Children with both autism and attention deficit or attention deficit hyperactivity disorders are four times more likely to bully than children in the general population, according to a study released today in the journal, Ambulatory Pediatrics. However, the researchers caution against labeling these children simply as bullies.

N.J. Lawmakers Push Proposals on Autism  Amid concern about New Jersey having America's highest autism rate, state senators on Monday pushed toward law proposals to promote research into autism and provide lifetime care for those with the disorder.

Thimerosal in vaccines has no link to autism  Exposure to thimerosal, a mercury-containing chemical previously used as a preservative in vaccines, does not increase the risk of autism, according to a report in the American Journal of Medical Genetics.  "Fierce debate" continues over whether thimerosal exposure raises the risk of autism, the authors point out. In the last two decades, there has been a rise in autism cases, which coincided with increased usage of vaccines containing thimerosal. Although studies have shown no evidence of an association, thimerosal was removed from all routine childhood vaccines in the U.S. in 2002

Doctors Look for Early Autism Signs  Within days of their birth, healthy babies will look you in the eye. By 4 months, they will delight in others. And by 9 months, they will exchange smiles. Jacob Day did none of those things. "We used to say it was like it burned his eyes to look at you," said his mother, Tamie Day of Antelope, Calif. "It was like a physically painful thing for him. It wasn't just that he wasn't looking at us; he was purposefully looking away."

Kids With Asperger's Syndrome: 'Bullied on a Daily Basis'  Growing up, Daniel Corcoran was the odd kid at school. He wasn't slow, but his coordination was off, and he tended to obsess on certain subjects, like light bulbs and air conditioners. At the time, his preoccupations with random objects seemed quirky, but harmless. But when Corcoran entered middle school, his quirks were not accepted by many of his classmates and his life became a social nightmare filled with name calling and other cruelties.

Children With Autism Can't Discern Between A Frown And A Smile  When we have a conversation with someone, we not only hear what they say, we see what they say. Eyes can smolder or twinkle. Gazes can be direct or shifty. "Reading" these facial expressions gives context and meaning to the words we hear.

Genetic Mutation Linked To Autism  University of Iowa researchers have learned more about a genetic mutation that contributes to autism. The mutation occurred in sperm cells of a father, who does not have autism, but passed the condition on to two of his children.
