Research
Shows Parent Involvement in Education Important To Student Success
It is no wonder
that parent involvement with the schools has become a major
educational issue. This is an era ofconcern about the
quality of education in this country.
States are taking a greater role in monitoring and maintaining academic standards. Communities are ever
more watchful of the expense of public education. Local
schools are concerned about continuing to provide
high-quality teaching and other services with dwindling
resources. And parents want assurance that their children
will receive adequate preparation to lead rewarding adult
lives.
A recent review of the research literature by
Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory found
that, "clearly, parent involvement is effective in fostering
achievement and affective gains at all levels, and schools
are encouraged to engage and maintain this involvement
throughout the elementary, middle school and secondary
years".
Parents need to be involved throughout the school year
reading to their children, helping with assignments,
participating in parent events at the school and
establishing a working relationship with teachers.

Good Nutrition
Is Another Key To Success
All parents want their children to be healthy. As elementary school
aged children go through remarkable physical changes of all kinds, their
food intake becomes a critical aspect of this growth and development.
Recent research shows that nourishing food not only makes a child
healthier, it makes him emotionally more stable, and it improves school
performance. It appears then that paying attention to our children's diets
pays high dividends. If only our children thought so, too! Because
children tend to rank their parents' views on food along with their
unpopular views on curfews, rock music, hair styles, etc., it is up to the
parents to, first of all, be clever about insinuating nutritious foods
into the family menus and, secondly, take a reasonable but hard line when
other approaches fail.
